  • What is a NIF?
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your taxpayer number in Portugal. It is required for various activities such as applying for a Golden Visa, opening a bank account, setting up utilities, renting or buying property, and registering with the National Health Service. The NIF is also known as the Número de Contribuinte.
  • Do I need a fiscal representative?
If you are a foreigner requesting a NIF as a non-resident, you will need a Representante Fiscal. The fee for the service already contemplates 6 months, giving you time to change your residency to Portugal. You must be aware that the fiscal representation services are limited to acquiring your NIF and forwarding any messages from the tax office until you either change your residency to Portugal. Otherwise it will be charged separately.
  • Do you offer ongoing fiscal representation?
Yes. It is charged at a rate of 150€ per year.
  • What is the process to obtain a NIF for my child?
To place an order, please complete the form with your child’s information. If your child is under 18 years of age, you will need to provide additional documents, including the minor’s birth certificate and copies of both parents’ passports. If you are a single parent, you can provide either Proof of Custody or a Death Certificate in place of the second parent’s passport.
  • What is the typical timeframe to receive my NIF?
As a rule of thumb, it should be issued within 1 week. However, it can take longer if the Tax Office is experiencing delays.
  • Which nationalities does New Dawn support for the NIF service?
We only accept nationalities that the Portuguese Government accepts.
  • What languages are accepted for the supporting documents?
In Portugal, identification documents in languages such as English, French, Italian, and Spanish are generally accepted, especially in administrative or legal contexts. However, each institution has the autonomy to decide whether or not to require translation into Portuguese. For other documents in languages other than these, it is common to require a certified translation or authentication by a consular entity or an official translator. This ensures the validity and comprehension of the content by the competent authorities. With New Dawn, translation from English, Italian, Spanish, French, and German will cost €25 per page plus VAT (or €30 VAT included) for certified translation. Translations through a consular entity, official translator, or in other languages will be subject to quotation.
